I am always the first to admit that I don’t make my bed everyday, but when I do, I like it to look perfect. I have had lots of requests asking me for a guide on how I make my beds so I thought I would do this step by step guide, along with my top tips for a well-made bed. Firstly, I HATE ironing. I iron the sheets on my guest bedrooms as they are rarely used which means I don’t have to do them often but on my own bed, I never iron my sheets. They get creased the moment I jump into bed so I tend not to bother. If I want to make my bed then I cover it in a thick bedspread and cushions, to make it look neat and tidy and cover my very creased bedding! Here is a step by step on how I make my bed - 1. Take all of the pillows off the bed and lay the duvet out flat so it just reaches the headboard and the drop either side is even. 2. Then take the bedspread, fold it in half and drape it over the bottom half of the bed. Both ends must drop down at the end of the bed. Make sure the drape over both sides is equal and that you are happy with the length of the drop at the bottom of the bed, as this is where the bedspread will sit. If you have a smaller bedspread then move it up the bed a bit more. 3. You then need to take the top layer and fold it back towards the headboard but not quite all the way. This will create a fold in the bedspread. 4. Then take the top layer from the end that’s near the headboard and fold it back on itself about 15cm away from the first crease. 5. Again, take the top layer and fold it back towards the headboard but not quite all the way so it creates your second crease. 6. Depending on the size of your bedspread, you can then fold the very top end of your bedspread back towards the second crease to create a third crease but if you don’t have enough fabric left then it would look fine to leave this step out. 7. Adjust your creases so they are evenly spaced and smooth. It’s a good idea to give your bedspread a light iron at the stage to hold the creases, so the next time you make the bed, the crease lines can be used as a guide. 8. You then need to take the top end of the duvet and fold it back towards the end of the bed so it ends close to either the nearest crease or in my case, the end of the top of the bedspread. 9. To make your duvet look a bit thicker (especially if you have your summer duvet on like mine) and to create that straight edge, you can then fold the top end of the duvet back underneath itself to make it look neater. 10. Plump your pillows and stand then up resting against the headboard. Don’t worry about the creases as they will be hidden. I like to use two pillows on each side. It’s now time to add your cushions. I have 6 cushions for my bed but 4 would look just as good. I always use feather filled cushions as they give a fuller look and hold their shape for longer. I got mine from TK Maxx and Homesense. The two larger cushions came without the inside cushion pads, so I bought Duck feather cushion pads from Dunelm (click here for them), which come in a variety of sizes. Always go for a feather inner that’s slightly bigger than the size of your cushion cover, to get that full look. Your front cushions should be smaller than the back cushions. For reference my back cushions are 65x65cm, the middle ones are 55x55cm and the front ones are 50x50cm. 11. Take your two largest cushions and give them a plump by shaking them and giving it a few punches (it's a great stress reliever). Place each cushion on the bed, upright in the middle of each pillow. Then give them a karate chop right down the middle of the cushion. This will only work on feather filled cushions. 12. Do the above again for every cushion but with each 2 cushions you put on, slightly stagger them going in towards the middle. 13. Then adjust everything so it all looks symmetrical and that the bedspread is smooth. You should now have a showhome worthy bed! Love
